Weston Photography Newsletter - August 2009
Greetings!
Where do I start? It
has been several months since I have sat down to write the
monthly newsletter. A lot has been happening here at Wildcat
Hill. I guess one of the most important events is our son going
off to San Diego State University at the end of this month. It
continually surprises me that so much time has gone by. From a
very early age we have been preparing Zach for college. But now
it is a reality. Are we prepared for him to leave? I would like
to say yes, but when that phone isn’t ringing letting me know
when he’s coming home the reality will set in. So much of my
time lately has been spent getting things ready and in order for
him to go, it’s been hard for me to sit and concentrate enough
to write it all down.
August Print of the
Month
The August Print of the Month:
Apartment # 2 is up for
viewing.
This photograph a continuation of Kim’s apartment series created
and photographed in the 1980’s when he lived in Carmel. He
painted the backdrops and brought in personal belongings to be
included in this imaginative series. Haven't you wanted to buy
an original piece of art directly from the artist? Well now the
time! Take a look at Kim's POM's for this year consider joining
and getting a discounted rate of $175 per photograph if you sign
up for the
POM Club. You must buy at
least 6 to get that rate. Questions? just give me a call
831-624-8111. or maybe you want to look at his new work, so many
new good images to pick from.
WORKSHOPS
Our 2009 Workshop Series has been quite the success, with the
current economy I was a little concerned about the enrollment,
but have been so grateful for all that have come to Wildcat Hill
to be with us this year. So far we have had 6 full photography
workshops: A Day with Kim Weston, The Wildcat Studio Nude II
Workshop, The Advanced Landscape, co taught with Randy Efros,
The Digital Platinum Workshop, co taught with Brian Pawlowski
and then two Weston Figure Workshops in June co taught with Mark
Comon from Paul’s Photo in Torrance CA. We have had great
instructors, models, participants and guest artist speakers!
Thank you! I always tell the participants that “it’s about the
experience” So if you are in need for a wonderful “experience”
then you should try one of our workshops very soon! Our last
scheduled workshop is another Wildcat Studio Nude II. Call to be
put on the waiting list. If our workshop dates don’t work for
you, remember you can come and take a one or two day or whatever
fills your needs - tutorial with Kim. You can get a lot out of a
one on one tutorial.

NEW
WORK
In the spring we went down to Los Angeles to photograph with
photographer Sylvie Blum. You will see Kim’s new work posted on
the website. Also check out the updated guest and workshop
pages to see some of the people that have been here this year.
WILDCAT HILL / BODIE HOUSE
We have met so many wonderful people by opening up our home.
It’s not always an easy thing to do. Kim believes we are just
stewards of Edward Weston’s home. A lovely single wall cracker
box of a house. (Didn’t want to call it a shack- oh no) We have
tried to keep it in the tradition of Edward Weston so when you
come to see it you can imagine him and Charis living here
together, him creating photographs and her writing about them.
We have converted her once garden/writing shed into a lovely
studio called Bodie House. You can rent it if you want to come
and stay with us on the property. Point Lobos is only a stone
throw away. Edward frequented Point lobos with his large 8x10
camera. Come and see his darkroom with his printing frames,
dogging tools and the single bulb hanging from the ceiling where
he did his contact printing.
PAINTED
PHOTOGRAPHS
Kim has been painting on his photographs every evening creating
a wonderful collection of painted photographs. Cody Edison a
2005 Scholarship Winner has been interning for Kim this summer.
What a beautiful book he and Kim are creating. It’s been a lot
of fun having Cody here for a couple of hours a week. The book
is coming along beautifully and I will let you all know when it
is completed hopefully before he goes back to CAL ARTS in
Valencia! (NOT UP YET - SOON I PROMISE)
FACE BOOK
AND

I have joined face book and You Tube. Last weekend while Kim was
mounting up his painted photographs I videoed him and put it up
on You Tube then linked it to my Face Book page, please visit me
there and join us! Hope I can keep up with all this new
technology. Meanwhile I will listen to Pandora.com while surfing
Face book and watching videos on You Tube! Oh MY!

2009 WESTON SCHOLARSHIP
We had our 6th Weston Photography Scholarship Awards Ceremony
and Exhibition at The Marjorie Evans Gallery in Carmel CA!
Congratulations to the 27 Winners! Please visit our website at
www.westonscholarship.org to see the winning photographs and
awards! We gave out a total of $8600 this year. Since its
inception, we have given 88 awards totaling $29,988! Our goal at
the outset was to generate interest among students in the
classic analog photographic processes and thereby, we hoped,
preserve that art form through another generation. As Kim
remarked at the award ceremony, the increase in participants
from 12 to 77 means that we are on the way to accomplish exactly
that.
Many of the scholarship winners have gone on to pursue their
photography career by attending such notable schools as The
Academy of Art in San Francisco, San Francisco Art Institute,
Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, and California
Institute of the Arts in Valencia. One of last year’s recipients
of the Julian P Graham Award is home for the summer and will
help Kim on a painted photograph book project.
Our 2009 Fine Art Fundraiser is rescheduled for May 2010. It
will coincide with the 2010 Weston Scholarship Awards Ceremony
and Exhibition. Hope you can join us and support this wonderful
cause!
I
know that's a lot to read so if you can't finish it now come
back and read it later. pass it on to your friends too!
Thank you very much for keeping in touch with us, supporting us
by coming to our workshops, staying in Bodie House, buying Kim's
photography and for signing up for our newsletter!
take
care and talk with you soon!
Sincerely,
Gina
Kim and Zach!
ps I
just added the Big Sur Nude Photo Workshop to our calendar check
it out on the workshop page.
