Weston Photography Newsletter - January 2010

Greetings and Happy New Year!

Another year has passed and we are so happy and blessed to have met and spent time with so many wonderful people! Thanks to all of you that have been following our newsletters, taking our workshops, buying our photographs and especially those that are part of our Print of Month Club (POM)!

3 Generations of Photography
Photography has been a tradition in the Weston Family for generations. Wouldn’t you like to own some of the 3rd Generation, Kim Weston?

2010 POM Portfolio Club – it’s the last year!
Here’s a way you can. Join our 2010 POM Portfolio Club! It’s our 10th year! It is hard to believe but the program has been so successful we just kept offering this special pricing year after year. So to celebrate our 10th year, we are offering limited edition photographs to our subscribers! For those of you that may not know what a limited edition is: a limited edition is restricted in the number of copies produced. Once they are all sold the negative will be retired.

Own a bit of history.
By joining the POM Club you get a discounted price of $200 per photograph (normally $400). Kim develops all of his negatives, prints his own photographs, mounts and spots his own work. He is a master printer and there is no waiting to receive your prints after you order them. He wraps them securely and sends them on time! Kim learned his craft assisting his father Cole in the darkroom making gallery prints from his grandfather Edward's original negatives. And working side by side with his uncle Brett Weston, not to mention he has been photographing for more than 30 years! His prints are exquisite. How can you pass up this opportunity?

Work Flow
Kim learned his darkroom protocol at an early age. He is very methodical in his approach to photographing, developing and printing. He can teach you how to work in the darkroom, what good darkroom etiquette is and how it works for him. Interested in working with figure models? We can teach you that too. We offer many different workshops here at Wildcat Hill. How about making digital negatives and printing them in Platinum?

Workshops
A couple of our workshops have been posted A Day with Kim Weston
and Studio Nude II but I am currently working on the logistics for the Digital Negatives to Platinum Class and the New California Mission Workshop excursion. We will also be joining Al Weber and David Vestal in June for a local coastal workshop.

Film
Yep we are still using film, it hasn’t gone away. Film is a constant and will always be here. Even though we haven’t switched to digital (Kim just can’t learn all of that technical information) more than 50% of the photographers that come to our workshops use digital.

Lifestyle
We approach photography as a lifestyle and will give you a small sampling of how we live our life around photography. Come and experience what it’s like to photograph at Wildcat Hill. Go away with an experience you won’t soon forget. Leave your troubles at home but don’t forget to pack your camera!

Visitors
Thanks to all of you who have to come to visit us at Wildcat Hill, whether it be for an hour or to stay with us in Bodie House for a few days. We enjoy meeting people who are as passionate about art as we are.

Teachers
Thank you for supporting our Weston Scholarship Portfolio Contest and for bringing your students to our house to learn about the history of The Weston Family. Thank you for encouraging your students to keep printing in a wet darkroom.

Friends and Colleagues
Thank you for the tremendous support of the Weston Scholarship Fund. Kim and I could not do it without you!

Thanks!
Thanks to all of our friends and colleagues on the Monterey Peninsula who graciously come to our workshops and show their work. Congratulations to the Center for Photographic Art for putting on some good shows and keeping the center alive!

Yes I know I sound like a broken record but……..
We really appreciate you all!

Sincerely Gina, Kim and Zach

Ps. I will be in San Francisco 3 out of 5 days next week.
