Weston Photography Newsletter - March 2010
Greetings,
March
is upon us and we have been hammered by the rain this winter.
Yesterday was the first day that I was ready for some sun and
perhaps a walk on the beach in the afternoon. The ground is
saturated and if we get too much more rain then all hell breaks
out around here. Today the sun is out! Hopefully I can get out
from behind this computer and enjoy a little of it!
Print of the Month
The 2010 March Print of Month
“Nude in Robe” can be viewed at
www.kimweston.com/pom/pom.htm
We
have offered our Print of the Month Portfolio Club for 10 years!
It has been so much fun to go through Kim’s body of work and
pick photographs to go into our portfolios. Where did the time
go? How could we be in our 10th year? As I look back at our
collections, I am happy we came up with the idea that was
inspired by the great Edward Weston himself. (Well with a little
help from his last wife and model Charis).
Subscribe Today!
This year will be the last year we will be offering The “POM
Portfolio Club”. Would you like to join? The price is $200 per
month (a 50% discount). One photograph for every month of the
year. Must purchase 6 in the calendar year to receive the $200
discount. More information on our website
http://www.kimweston.com/pom/subscribe_pom.htm or
please call 831.624.8111 and I can fill you in on how to join.
“THANK
YOU” to our collectors that have purchased all 10 of The POM
Portfolio’s! And thank you to those that have purchased
Portfolios and single photographs. We couldn’t have done it
without you! I can still remember the first sale over the
internet, we were so excited and then it was the first person to
sign up for our POM Club! It was so nerve wracking to see if
this new way of marketing ourselves would work.

Wildcat Hill
Seems like we are always busy here on Wildcat Hill. And this
spring it’s no different. Kim is always working on his
photography and feels it’s important to do something every day,
whether it is in the darkroom printing with his new Condit
enlarger, mounting the POM’s or spotting his photographs.
He just finished printing another large body work that consists
of images from his Mamiya RB 67. He prints them in the 11x14
format, spots and signs them and then puts them in a handmade
portfolio box. What an amazing collection! The amount of work he
creates is amazing.
Shows: Exposed Gallery in May 2010 / Marjorie Evans Gallery in
December 2010
In May we are having a show at the Exposed Gallery in downtown
Carmel. Owners Rachel Short and Evynn LeValley have opened a
sweet little gallery on San Carlos between Ocean and 7th and
have agreed to give Kim a show! It’s been 13 years since Kim has
had a show in Carmel. This will be fun. And we will also be
having a Painted Ballerina show at the Marjorie Evans Gallery in
December 2010!
Weston Scholarship - Save the date! Wednesday, May 5, 2010:
7th Annual Weston Scholarship Exhibition and Award Ceremony,
6-7pm; Marjorie Evans Gallery; Sunset Cultural Center Carmel, CA
8th and San Carlos St.
New! Stay tuned for our Fine Print Program! Three 1st
place winners have each graciously donated one photograph to the
Weston Scholarship for sale to help raise money for the Weston
Scholarship. In return they get a tutorial with Kim on printing,
mounting and spotting. Kim has already printed with 2 students.
He was busy this last weekend. I will keep you posted on how you
can help by purchasing a Weston Scholarship photograph.
Thank you! Freestyle Photographic Supplies
Freestyle Photographic has generously donated supplies to our
local King City High School Photography Program so they could
finish out their 2nd semester. Their funds had been cut and
their supplies depleted. So when Weston Scholarship approached
Patrick DelliBovi to ask for a partial donation, Patrick
graciously donated the full amount to them. Thank you Freestyle
for such a generous donation. And thank you for getting out our
orders correctly and promptly. We never have to worry about
ordering supplies from you because it always comes in perfect
condition and we get it right away!
Weston Scholarship welcomes a new member to our board.
Katherine Edison, a soprano soloist, applied voice instructor
and non-profit administrator, holds an MFA in Performance from
the Art Institute in Chicago. After having been a performer in
residence at the Banff Centre for the Performing Arts, a voice
instructor at the Art Institute of Chicago and working soprano
soloist, Katherine shares her passion for voice and the arts as
a NATS certified applied voice instructor.
Katherine is serving as our educational outreach representative.
She has visited several schools this year, bringing along the
Weston Scholarship Winner Portfolio as an example of the work
that has placed in the competition. She offers guidance and
encouragement to the students so they can be prepared to submit
their portfolios to the scholarship contest and for future
college portfolio reviews.
Thank you Katherine!
We are working on a new scholarship site and it should be up and
running by the end of the month.
Freestyle Photographic Supplies
We purchase most or our supplies from Freestyle, except for
mount stock and a photographer friend Steve Berger
http://stevebergerphotography.com
suggested we try Redimat
http://www.redimat.com/products/alpha_rag.html
for our mount stock needs. As you all
know how important it is to receive good mount stock, in good
condition, that you don’t have to send back because it is
damaged! Or not in stock! We ordered Museum Alpha Rag - Pure
White because it is the closest to Westminster Bright White. It
arrived very quickly and it matched very closely and it was not
damaged. If any of you need to buy quality mount stock, maybe
you should try Redimat too. Thanks for the tip Steve.
As
always Kim and I thank you all for your support in continuing
the pursuit of fine art photography! We couldn't do it without
you!
That s all for now,
Sincerely Gina, Kim and Zach from San Diego! |
