James Johnson's Vision on Film
Wildcat and Big Sur Workshop 2023
James W. Johnson is a creative, designer, and photographer from the Southwest. After studying theatrical set design at the University of Idaho, he moved to the East Coast to pursue a career in the theater. Through his efforts to promote his work, he discovered photography.
Working first as a performance photographer, he quickly realized that his passion for visual arts and performance translated well into photography. Since then, James has focused his creativity and artistic intent on landscape photos and the nude form.
Shooting exclusively on film, James believes that photography, if practiced correctly, is a contest between habitual experience and the photographic process. Humans often find themselves existing in presumption, unable to experience newness in familiar (or unfamiliar) places. Through the challenges of film photography, James can discover new realities in his subjects. His photographs are documentation of his efforts to capture those realities.
