This was our first visit to the ranch in September. The colors had begun to change and the scenery was beautiful. The cottonwoods were yellowish green and reflected beautifully along the Little Snake River. We had an amazing group of photographers and models that came together to create some amazing work. It was fun to have some returning folks and some that were new to Weston Workshops. The weather was a bit on the cold side but it usually warmed up once we were to start photographing for the day. This was a whirlwind of a workshop as we incorporated a few new field trip locations to photograph at including the Little Snake River Museum and a beautiful Sandstone location. Our participants had a large variety of scenery to work with and to create breathtaking images. We are excited to share the finished images with you soon!
The Ranch
Photographing at The Ranch is always a classic location. The Ranch has been in the Boyer family for generations and you can feel it while being there. Located on the Continental Divide, the high sage brush eco-climate is ripe for photographic creativity. The history of the location can be seen in the photographs that are taken there. It is truly a special place and somewhere that we look forward to creating at every year. We have been going for four years and we still feel the creative vibe when we are there.
The Sandstones
The Sandstone location was a new photographic location for us this year. After the year after last, Jock did some scouting around the property and found these amazing sandstone features. They are only about 10 minutes away from the ranch which makes them very convenient to use as a photographic location. The variety of forms the rocks offered was endless for figure photography. At one point, a model climbed up one of the formations and was posing from atop. We are excited to go back to that spot next year.
The Aspens
The Aspens hadn’t quite turned but were still as beautiful as always. The baby saplings were turning which made for some fun layered shots with yellow aspens, models, and green adult aspens. This is another favorite spot and are always amazed at the many photographic options it holds.
The Abandoned Cabin
The cabin is a wonderful spot. This elevated sage brush grassland at about 7500 feet is always a spot rich in creativity and history. Not many other places can you experience and photograph a piece of American History. That cabin used to be inhabited by a rough and hearty people who have contributed to the world we live in today.
The Little Snake River Museum
This new location was a lot of fun to work at. For years, we have been coming to the ranch and always pass by The Little Snake River Museum. We always thought it odd to have a museum in a town that doesn’t have a gas station or general store. We finally got the chance this year to photograph there and it didn’t disappoint. The location is huge, with around 10 historic cabins sprinkled along the grounds. They even have an old saloon in perfect condition. We used period piece costumes and prairie feel costumes to create some fun stories at this location. We think it was a nice break for the totally nude aspect to the workshop and presents the participants with another obstacle to overcome. We hope to go back the following year!
Next Year
We are fully committed to going back to the Boyer YL Ranch in 2022. For next year, we are going to go in June, when the wildflowers are in full effect. We are already looking forward to it! If you want to know when spots open up for next year, click the button below. Thank you!
