Kim Weston & John Sexton at Point Lobos State Park
Kim Weston & John Sexton at Point Lobos State Park

Greetings!

We had the pleasure to spend a few hours with John Sexton and his wife Anne Larson at Point Lobos State Park last month. John and Kim have such a good time together, talking about their time spent with Kim's uncle Brett Weston. They both have so many fond memories of Brett. They both do an amazing repertoire of Brett, his movements and manners of speaking. It was fun!

Please join us for this exiting exhibition of Kim Weston's new work,

Wildcat Studio Nude Testimonial - Next Wildcat Workshop September 14-16, 2012

Gina and Kim,

The Wildcat Studio Nude Workshop is one of those very rare workshops that exceeded every expectation I had. It was wonderful from an artistic point of view and absolutely magical as a personal experience that I will treasure for a very long time.

In fact, please consider this note as a request for a spot in 2013!  I will be delighted to give you a deposit today. Thanks for being such warm and gracious hosts and I look forward to seeing you next year.

Mark Sloane

One on One Workshops

Remember you can always schedule a One on One Workshop with Kim here at Wildcat Hill. Learn how to photograph figure nudes, landscapes at Point Lobos, Black and White darkroom process, including developing negatives, printing, mounting and spotting. We can all use a lesson in that! right?

"My recent two-day, one-on-one workshop with Kim was truly a wonderful experience!  Both days were filled with unique photographic opportunities.  Shooting alongside Kim was insightful and motivating! Looking through his viewfinder and having him look through mine while discussing what we were seeing, and how I might approach the subject, was very beneficial to me. The time spent producing platinum prints allowed me to enjoy hands-on, what I had only been able to read about.

Kim also reviewed photographs of both Edward and Brett Weston in addition to a number of projects he has been working on. Learning the stories behind the creation of a number of classic Weston photographs along with some life stories broadened my appreciation of the work. Both Kim and his wife Gina are quite hospitable, and their approach to customizing the workshop to align with the needs of the participant help make it a perfect fit. I highly recommend a One-on-One workshop with Kim to any lover of fine art photography." Rick Dixon, Baltimore, MD  5/21/12

2012 Weston Scholarship Awards Ceremony

The Weston Scholarship founded by Gina & Kim Weston had their 8th annual Weston Scholarship and Award Ceremony at the Marjorie Evans Gallery on May 8, 2012. The show was phenomenal, we gave out $10,200 dollars. Photographer Roman Loranc came down from Mt. Shasta, he helped us judge the show, and out of the $10,200 we awarded, one of the awards was a $2000 scholarship that we gave in his name. Roman is a huge supporter of the Weston Scholarship! He has donated his photographs to be sold to help raise money for our fund. Visit our scholarship site for more information and to see all of the photos from the show and the award ceremony. Weston Scholarship Website

Check out our WebSite! I have lots of new posts going out all of the time. Sometimes they don't get into the newsletter. You can sign right up on the website and get the posts delivered right into your mailbox in the form of an email - as soon as I publish them to the site. Like A New workshop in Wyoming.

Greetings!

Last weekend was our first Nude Photography Workshop of 2012. We had 9 participants, 3 models, 2 perfect weather days and a lot of fun working together to create some amazing photographs. Huntington Witherill, Roman Loranc and Brian Pawlowski were our guest artists for the night. Every bed on our property was full! Kim made wonderful breakfasts and lunchs for the guests that were staying with us (can't forget to mention he & Zach made dinner for everyone on Sat. night) and Tracy, Huntington's wife brought us Easter dinner after the workshop was over on Sunday. We had ham for days!

Thank you all for coming to the workshop and thanks to Roman and Huntington and Brian for sharing their work.

Life at Wildcat Hill

The winter rains have been infrequent but we have had so many amazing cloud days. I have been spending my off time, that is when I am not signing up people for workshops, showing people our home, posting images on FaceBook, making catalogs, updating my websites (www.westonscholarship.org), doing my taxes - ok now you get it I'm busy, at the beach! I love to go to the beach and take pictures. Morning and night. It changes everyday. Kim and I walk almost every morning, its our morning meditation where we just get to soak in all of the natural beauty around us. I used to check my email before my walks but decided that can wait until later! Several mornings a week I go to yoga and now I am doing a little weight training. Sitting in front of a computer for hours at a time is deadly!! So don't forget to get up and go when you have some extra play time.

Last month we met Xiao Lu from the Timeless Gallery in Beijing China. He and his friend Wan Wang came for a visit to see us and to buy some of Kim's fine art black and white photographs. Mr Lu invited us to come to China in 2013 for a 3 Generation Weston Show! How exciting. We also got invited to go to Finland too! Looks like 2013 will be another traveling year for us.

Thank You!

I will be sending out another newsletter on April 1st. I need to get back on track and somehow I am almost a month behind. Procrastination is not a good thing. Before I know it the month has already slipped by.

I had a photo shoot with Kim last week. I haven't modeled for him in years. We went to Carmel Beach and I stood on a rock looking out to the ocean. I just borrowed some beautiful flowing clothes from a dear friend of mine and I hope we will get the perfect weather to do it again. WOW what a trip!

Zach has been in the darkroom printing us out of house and home. Sure hope his summer job pans out. :)

Thank you to all of our loyal supporters. We appreciate all of you.

Take care and keep in touch!

Greetings!

The winter has been pretty mild here on the California Coast. The sunrises and sunsets have been spectacular this season! Can't remember a time that they been so beautiful for so many days in a row! Though we are longing for big winter storms and rain we are happy with what we have. We are gearing up for our 2012 Weston Photography Workshop Series, and we are excited about meeting all of the new people that are coming and looking forward to seeing the familiar faces that we have met over the years.

The Edward Weston Workshop: A Day with Kim Weston is scheduled for March 17, 2012. I know its on St. Patricks Day. Maybe instead of our delicious homemade spaghetti (our regular meal) we should be cooking Corned Beef and cabbage. Kim got a really good recipe from our friend John Wrobleski and its so good!

Only one day left for the February POM!

Kim Weston - New Silver Gelatin Photographs

Be sure to view Kim Weston's new Silver Gelatin Photographs!"For me the "Vege Series" was a humorous look at my grandfather Edward Weston's pepper series. So many people wanted to see sexual content in the photographs. Of course saying more about the viewer than the artist. Maybe for those people I wanted to make it a little more obvious."

Kim Weston Painting on Photographs

Kim Weston Painting on Photographs

Kim Weston has been painting on his photographs for over 5 years now. He started painting on his small 4x5 Platinum Photographs after our friend, photographer Ryuijie taught him the process. Kim loved learning how to print with platinum. He always believed the process was difficult to learn so he had always shied away from it. Ryuijie told him it was easy and that he could teach him in an afternoon. He was right!

Yep! you heard it right.

I really want to thank you and Kim for such an incredible experience!  I felt so lucky and honored to be in a place where you can literally feel the electric, creative energy from generations of artists.  Even better, we had world class models, Kim’s expert guidance, beautiful light, and your gracious hospitality and organization.  It was, without question, the best workshop I have ever attended. I now understand why this was Randy’s 4th time!

All the best,

Some of the skills that you will learn at this workshop are how to compose, work with light, how to interact, direct and create a good working relationship with the model you are photographing. Be the Light Fundraiser - A Benefit for Rachael Short

On November 1, 2010 we awoke the morning after Halloween to find out the Rachael Short had been in a very serious car accident. Rachael is a local Carmel (Big Sur) photographer whom we have become very good friends with these past several years. She is a young photographer with a thriving wedding photography business and she is also a fine art photographer. She has traveled extensively outside of the USA and photographed her way around the world.

We had the pleasure of getting to know Rachael through our workshops where she modeled for us and showed her work as a guest artist at several of our workshops. We also worked with her and Evynn LeValley at their Exposed Gallery when they gave Kim a show in the summer of 2010. Unfortunately Rachael's injuries were pretty severe and she suffered a spinal cord injury and she is in a wheelchair for the time being. This is a quote from Rachael's latest blog entry.

"Love, Life, Light: a series of Polaroid transfers made with the help of Evynn LeValley. This series was started on my 28th birthday when I was backpacking in Pine Valley, Los Padres Forest. The idea was to document my hands every year to show my aging. After my car accident on November 1, 2010, when I suffered a spinal cord injury which left my hands impaired, this series has taken another meaning. My hands are changing monthly, becoming stronger, changing shape. Time (along with hard work and motivation) will tell how much function I will regain. I hope for full function and try not to think otherwise. The mind is a powerful tool." Rachael Short.

Below are some photos from Rachael's Benefit. We raised over $100,000.00!!! Thanks to our crew! Erin Kenyon came to me and said I want to do this in April which was only a few months away - some thought she was out of her mind but with love and help of an amazing community of friends we pulled it off with such great success!!! Cheers to you Rachael and to your recovery. We all love you very much.

Greetings!

Fall has been pretty nice here on the central coast. Kim's garden is still producing food. We still have golden delicious and red delicious apples on our trees. Our "Beverly Hills" apple tree has produced 2 crops of apples this year! I have never heard of that happening! The Meyer lemon trees are full of sweet juicy lemons and the garden is still producing tomatoes, a few zucchini, sweet peas and of course the chard is still thriving. Kim and I always argue about the apples, I like to keep them on the tree as long as possible - its perfect storage as far as I am concerned, but he loves to pick them in big bags and give them away to our friends and neighbors. Kim is in Montana right now and it is snowing with about 8 inches of snow on the ground. In the meantime I have taken every opportunity to be down on Carmel beach - if we are friends on FB you have seen all of my posts.

Kim Weston - Print of the Month

November's photograph, Oaxaca Nude #11 was taken in Oaxaca during our workshop "Following the footsteps of Edward Weston" a few years ago. We spent time at the Manual Alvarez Bravo Center photographing and using their darkroom to make platinum prints. Kim loved the light in Oaxaca and guessed Edward did too. It was a special visit to see the same places Edward saw so many years ago. This special offer available until the end of November 2011. $250 normally $400. A perfect Christmas gift for someone who loves photography!

Shows

See our upcoming Exhibits for more information about Kim's participation in the Miniature Show at the Exposed Gallery in Carmel (images above - Opening on November 25) and the upcoming show in December at the OpenShutter Gallery in Durango CO.

Catching up

October was a great month for me. I went to Lake Powell with Kim for a workshop and then I went to Italy with my girlfriend and her daughter. 2 weeks of laughing, drinking wine and getting lost (well not all of the time). We saw so many wonderful things, eat some amazing food and walked for miles!

As the days get shorter I will be posting more and more. The holidays are upon us and I hope you are getting ready for some Turkey and festivities. I do miss the late night sunsets but I don't miss the dark mornings traveling to Monterey to do yoga. Maybe next October I should plan to be on vacation again. Just until the time change that is.

Have a wonderful Thanksgiving! We are thankful you are in our lives. Thanks for spending time with us, purchasing our work and being our friends.

Forever filled with gratitude,

Gina, Kim and Zach
