"Kim Weston - Wyoming Music Lesson"
As many of you know, for many years I have been inspired by the late painter, Balthus (1908-2001). Unfortunately I was never able to meet the man. One of his paintings that I really love is “Guitar Lesson”.
During our Spain Nude Workshop in Andalusia, we were given a “one day project” where we were asked to create a specific work (photograph) with a given assignment, using props and typical objects from Andalusian traditions.
I started thinking about my personal project and when I found a guitar to work with I was so excited! I was finally able to create the photograph that I have been thinking about for years, using Balthus’s “Guitar Lesson” for inspiration. And lucky for me Larva and Sara, our fine art nude models were traveling with us. We had talked about doing this scene and had researched the painting, so we knew how we wanted our version to look. This is why it’s so important for me to work with models that I know and are comfortable working with.
When I came back from Spain and was looking at my own version of Spain Guitar Lesson, I knew I had the makings for a new series! Not Guitar Lesson but Music Lesson! And wherever I go I can work on this theme.
This month’s POM “Wyoming Music Lesson” was originally inspired by a Helmut Newton Polaroid. It was taken at the YL Boyer Ranch at our Nude in the Landscape Workshop, co-taught with Mark Comon from Los Angeles.
