4x5 Tutorial with Kim Weston

Kim had a great time guiding Isabel Lawrence through the fine details of operating a 4x5 view camera last weekend! Because the 4x5 is so intricate, he stressed the importance of mastering the basics of operation before getting into the fine details of the camera.

Words can’t express how much I enjoyed my one on one tutorial with Kim. He is an incredibly patient and knowledgeable teacher.

The first half of the morning was spent with a one on one viewing of four generations of Weston Photography in Kim and Gina's gallery on Wildcat Hill.

Sitting with him[Kim] in his gallery, looking at four generations of Weston photography was an experience I won’t soon forget. Hearing stories about Edward, Cole and Brett fostered in me a whole new love and appreciation of these incredible artists.

Next came camera familiarization in Kim's studio, where Isabel assembled her 4x5 and Kim went over basic functionality of the camera.

They broke for lunch at 12 and finished off the day shooting around Wildcat until 4:00 p.m.

Thank you for your warmth and hospitality and for the tour of your home and Edward’s darkroom. I never would have guessed that such amazing photography could be produced in such a humble space.

I look forward to implementing all that you taught me about photographing with a large format camera!
