3 Generations of Weston Photography in Kuusamo, Finland

Greetings!

The end of the year is very close and we are a few months behind in saying "Thank You" to so many people that we have met this year! Especially Kirmo Wilen and Hannele Fors for the workshop and exhibition in Finland!

In September, Kim was invited by Hannele Fors to be the headliner at the 2013 Kuusamo Nature Photo FestivalKirmo Wilen (a long time collector of Kim's work) brought his collection of "Weston's" to Kuusamo for the 70 print show. Kirmo showcased 12 Kim Weston "Print of the Month" Portfolio's, 2008 - 2012, that's 60 Kim Weston prints! 4 Cole Weston, 1 Brett Weston, 1 Tina Modotti and 4 Edward Weston. We were so happy to see all of the photos hung in the same gallery. Thank you, Kirmo for a wonderful visit and tour of your country! Stay tuned for my next video "Gina on the Spot - The Finland Connection".

Kim Weston Kuusamo Nature Photo Festival Show

Paris, France

A special thanks to Kitty and Bruno Cohen, Trevor and Faye Yerbury for our workshop at Chateau St. Just just outside of Paris, France.

In November we went on a workshop adventure to Paris, France! With Kitty Cohen's gracious hospitality we spent a lovely 12 days in Paris. We arranged it so we could teach on the weekend and then go to Paris Photo for the show. We were so lucky to get a VIP pass from The Hackelbury Gallery via Florence and Anthony Rodale. We spent hours at Paris Photo wandering from booth to booth with our friend Miguel-Soler-Roig from Spain. We met so many wonderful people, Lucien Clergue, Katherine Cooper, gallery owners and collectors. We even ran into old friends which was such a pleasant surprise. Duncan Miller Gallery brought "Nude in Cactus" to his booth at Foto Fever which was in the basement of the Louvre. Kim came home with some wonderful new images. Stay tuned....

Our first Wildcat Studio Nude will be on first weekend of April 4-6, 2014. Please save the date. This year I will be using the program EventBrite for all of my workshop registrations. I am finding I need help with my office duties and this will help me streamline some of my work. It will also make it easier to send out my thank you emails and testimonial requests. Still working on the other dates, will get them posted soon.

Discover/Rediscover: Three Generations of the Weston family of Photographers

Midwest Museum of Art

July 19 - October 6, 2013

Opening at Midwest Museum 6pm-8pm, Saturday August 17, 2013
Walk through gallery talk with Kim Weston - 7:00pm.

The Midwest Museum of American Art presents an exhibition of over 100 photographs by three generations of the Weston Family of Photographers beginning Friday, July 19th, through Sunday, October 6th 2013.

Included will be landmark images by Edward Weston (1886-1958), one of the two pioneers of black and white photography; some images printed by the artist and others printed by his son Cole Weston (1919-2003). Oldest son Brett Weston (1911-1993) is represented by both landscape and figurative images.

The third generation of this California-based group is represented by Grandson Kim Weston (b. 1953-). Kim Weston's photographic vision has long been influenced by the work of his grandfather Edward Weston. He learned his craft by assisting his father Cole Weston. He also worked as an assistant for many years to his uncle Brett. Kim and his wife, Gina, live at Wildcat Hill, former studio and home of Edward Weston. They offer several unique workshops throughout the year. As an educator, Kim has been a mentor for many photographers in Monterey County. He specializes in the nude but also works in landscape formats. This exhibit will be mounted from the collection of Dr. Rick and Cindy Burns. This exhibit is sponsored by Lakota Corporation.

“Growing Up Weston” the new documentary depicting three generations of Westons, will premiere at the 60th Birthday Celebration of Kim Weston, grandson of Edward, son of Cole and nephew of Brett Weston --- the first family of photography OF California whose landmark work has been recognized internationally.

Award-winning Writer/Director Isaac Artenstein captures Kim Weston at Wildcat Hill, near Point Lobos, where Kim’s grandfather Edward lived and created some of the most iconic work in 20th Century photography. Kim lives there now with his wife Gina and son Zachary, photographing, teaching and heading the Weston Scholarship, which supported the production of this documentary.

In “Growing Up Weston” we visit the lovingly preserved family home, and step into Edward’s darkroom, where Kim shows how his grandfather used only a contact printer, a light bulb and a kitchen timer to create his highly sought after masterpieces. Kim also demonstrates his own printing techniques in his own darkroom in Wildcat, where he also holds photography workshops, lectures and special presentations year-round.

Exhibition May 11 – August 10, 2013

An exhibition of 30 Fine Art Black and White Photographs will be on display for the first time in history at the Sang K Jun Arts and Science Gallery. The Weston Legacy is one of the most important and creative families in photography.

Edward Weston (born 1886 – died 1958) major American photographer of the early to mid-20th century, best known for his carefully composed, sharp focused images of natural forms, landscapes and nudes. His work influenced a generation of American Photographers.

Brett Weston, son of Edward Weston (born 1911 – died 1993) an American photographer known for his high contrast, abstract imagery. The subjects he chose were, for the most part, not unlike what interested him early in his career; plant leaves, knotted roots and tangled kelp along the beach. He concentrated mostly on close-ups and abstracted details, but his prints reflected a preference for high contrast that reduced his subjects to pure form.

Kim Weston, grandson of Edward, nephew of Brett, son of Cole Weston (born 1953 ?) is known as the master of Fine Art Nude photography. He learned his craft assisting his father Cole in the darkroom making gallery prints from his grandfather Edward’s original negatives. Kim also worked for many years as an assistant to his uncle Brett, whose bold, abstract photographs rank as some of the finest example.

Zach Weston, son of Kim Weston (born 1990 ?) is the 4th Generation of The Weston Legacy, he grew up on Wildcat Hill, surrounded by iconic photographs made by his great grandfather Edward, great uncle Brett and grandfather Cole Weston. Zach has been moved by this medium and has sharpened his vision by photographing the nude figure, still life and abstract form.
