October - Ranch House: Passing Through

from $375.00

October Print of the Month | 2025 | Limited Silver Gelatin Print

Limited Silver Gelatin Print | Part of Kim Weston's Later Works (c. 2021-2025)

Like Balthus, Kim Weston believes some things can only be expressed through images, not words—which is why both artists prefer to create rather than explain their work. Balthus was drawn to capturing that fleeting moment when a girl transitions into young womanhood, what he called "the mystery of childhood." The French painter's ability to show both innocence and awakening sexuality in the same image—that delicate, in-between stage of adolescence—struck a chord with Kim's own photographic vision. In Les Beaux Jours, Balthus captured exactly the kind of mysterious, transformative moment that Kim explores through his camera.

Hand-printed by Kim Weston in his darkroom using traditional methods on museum-quality fiber paper, mounted on archival mat board. Numbered and signed by the artist.

Kim's inspiration came from Balthus's 1944-45 painting Les Beaux Jours (Happy Days), which captures that mysterious moment between childhood and womanhood. This led Kim to create "Ranch House Reflections" at a Wyoming ranch, with a young woman by the fireplace—the first photograph exploring the passage from one generation to the next. "Ranch House: Passing Through" continues that exploration.
