Open Edition Silver Gelatin Print | Part of Kim Weston's Early Works | Vintage (c. 1980s)
From Kim's New York apartment series, inspired by his fascination with how city dwellers surrounded themselves with living things amid the concrete and steel of downtown Manhattan. After seeing his friends' plant-filled apartments, Kim went back to his California studio and built his own versions—painting city backdrops, filling rooms with greenery, recreating those urban oases he'd experienced. Though he painted and built everything in color, he photographed it all in black and white, knowing exactly how different paint colors would translate to shades of gray. A cat appears throughout the series, moving through these imagined spaces where plants and city life coexist.
Hand-printed by Kim Weston in his darkroom using traditional methods on museum-quality fiber paper, mounted on archival mat board. Numbered and signed by the artist.
