Kim Weston Figure Photography Workshop at Edward Weston's Wildcat Hill | April 2026
Our most recent Weston Photography Workshop brought together a small group of six dedicated photographers for an immersive three-day experience at our home in the Carmel Highlands. With three inspiring models and a setting that offered endless visual possibilities, the workshop was a balance of creative exploration and technical growth.
Each day began with the soft coastal light that defines the Highlands—fog drifting through the cypress, shifting skies, and the constant rhythm of the ocean below. These natural elements became an integral part of the creative process, challenging participants to respond intuitively to changing conditions while refining their technical approach.
Working closely with three professional models, photographers explored a range of approaches to figure photography. From environmental portraiture that incorporated the dramatic landscape, to more intimate and minimal compositions indoors, each session encouraged participants to develop their own voice. With a small group, there was plenty of time for one-on-one guidance, thoughtful pacing, and the freedom to experiment.
Throughout the workshop, we emphasized composition and lighting, but also the importance of communication and collaboration. Building rapport with the models, directing with clarity, and responding to subtle gestures and expressions all played a key role in creating compelling images.
Mornings were spent reviewing work as a group, offering constructive feedback, and discussing the artistic decisions behind each image. These reviews are always a highlight, giving participants the opportunity to see how others approached the same scene while gaining insight into their own creative instincts.
Beyond the photography, what makes these workshops special is the sense of community that develops over just a few days. Shared meals, laughter, and the collective experience of creating in such a unique environment leave a lasting impression. By the end of the workshop, the group felt less like participants and more like collaborators.
We’re grateful to the photographers who joined us and to the models who brought such presence and creativity to each session. Edward Weston’s home in the Carmel Highlands continues to provide a stunning backdrop, but it’s the people and the shared passion for photography that truly make these workshops memorable.
We’re already looking forward to the next one!
